One of the most important keys to success in language learning is self-discipline. Without it, you will not be able to stay on track with your goals and achieve them. Self-discipline is a skill that needs to be practiced every day; if you don’t reinforce good habits then they won’t stick, and change will be difficult. This blog post discusses how to use discipline as a tool for achieving your language goals!

Motivation is needed to start any project. The problem is that motivation often comes and goes. It’s not always enough to just want something, you must work for it too. This can be difficult when the going gets tough or when something isn’t working how you expected; but without strong discipline in learning a language this will never happen.

Adults who are successful in their professional careers have the discipline to show up every day and put in a good day’s work, regardless of if they like what they do or not (and may even despise it). Therefore, we often see extremely intelligent people end up with high-paying jobs that don’t fit their interests at all.

Motivation is needed to start any project, but it comes and goes.

I’m not saying that it is impossible to learn a language without discipline, because I do know people who have done just that. However, this isn’t the norm and most of us will need to be disciplined in our learning if we want to accomplish our goals. If you haven’t had much success with your language learning, this may be the reason why. The good news is that discipline can be learned too!

The key to success in language learning (and anything else) is having both motivation and discipline. Without them you will struggle no matter what methodologies or techniques you use. The trick with developing greater discipline is to focus on it every day.

Be prepared to do the job even when you do not feel like it.

Think about what happens when you fail to show up for work or miss a day of school; the same thing will happen with your language learning if you don’t keep it up on a daily basis. Now that’s not to say that there are days where we can choose not to do our studying, but this should be the exception not the rule.

Have a plan for learning.

You must have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, as well as grasping what success means to you. You need to have a schedule and you should be dedicated to sticking with it. Make sure that you also know what your motivation is so that you can determine which activities will help bring out the best in yourself, as well as identify those things that may distract you from reaching your goal of speaking another language. For example, avoid social media browsing if you know that it will prevent you from studying the 10-words vocabulary a day you scheduled to do, until the job is done. You will be more focussed the fewer distractions you have and thus you will be able to accomplish your goals.

Do not only want but also act.

You cannot teach someone discipline, but you can encourage them and motivate them! Discipline does not mean punishing yourself with hours of tedious study everyday… it means showing up regularly, even when you don’t think you can do a great job. Instead of skipping the one-hour activity you planned to do, you might do a 15-minute listing exercise instead. It will still count toward achieving your overall goal.

Prioritise your tasks.

Complete one tiny task that you want to accomplish today. Think about how good you will feel when you achieve your objective and what a positive impact this will have on building up momentum for future tasks. This will increase your motivation to carry on using the language.

No more guilt

You should try to avoid feeling guilty about what you do and don’t accomplish. Even if it’s a task that seems like it will never end, like planning to learn ten verb conjugations and you only did two. Celebrate the fact that you’ve gotten through one step on your way to completing this goal! You might think of these as baby steps, but every single thing counts towards getting the outcome you want.

Set realistic deadlines.

Do not try to complete more than you can. Instead, break up the tasks into smaller deadlines and set a reward at each step to keep yourself motivated. Also try to have regular checking points with an accountability partner to avoid falling off the wagon.

Doing this will help you to complete your projects with less stress, more motivation, and better results.

Practice self-discipline consistently.

This means you need to practice being consistent daily. You can do this by writing down your tasks on your calendar or generating a list of what needs to get done each day. Thus, you will create simple habits that will help you keep your eyes on the ball and focus on the end result.

Find a trusted coach.

A coach will be able to give you constructive feedback and identify aspects of your performance that will need improvement.

Discipline is key in any area of life. Without discipline, you won’t be able to accomplish anything that requires time and effort on your part whether it’s personal or professional, educational, or otherwise. Without self-discipline, there will never be a path toward success for language learners. It takes determination to persevere through hardship, frustration, and failure. It takes discipline to keep practicing when you are not seeing immediate results or where it feels like nothing is happening at all.

Conclusion

The path to success in language learning is not an easy one. It requires commitment, consistency, and determination on your part. You must work hard for what you want if you truly want it bad enough. But with discipline as the focus of your practice every day, anything can be achieved!
