Every person who learns a language has his/her own reasons. It would be virtually impossible to find out the motive behind everyone’s decision, but we will list here some of the best reasons for learning a second language.

1- It preserves your brain agility

There are a long list of studies demonstrating the cognitive benefits of learning another language, and the age of the learner is irrelevant.

When studying a second language, your memory improves, you have a longer attention span and your risks of age-related cognitive impairment reduces significantly.

2- You become more confident

You decide to learn a new language and you practice it from the beginning. You notice improvement with every day of study and this boosts your confidence. You venture expressing yourself in your new found tongue, and you loose the fear of sounding ridiculous because you notice that you are communicating effectively with others.

This new found confidence can then be transferred to any other subject you wish to study.

3- You act more on logic and less on feelings

There are countless studies showing that learners of a second language, when thinking in that language to take a decision, end up by choosing the most logical outcome instead of letting their emotions to get in the way.

4- Your world becomes bigger

When studying a foreign language, you learn about new cultures and diverse ways of living. You become more tolerant and you appreciate more what people have in common and pay less attention to the differences. You’re able to create cross-cultural relationships.

5- You’ve got more job opportunities

Speaking two or more languages can make a lot of difference to your job expectation. The world is more globalised both culturally and economically, and businesses are connecting with each other worldwide. So your ability to speak a second language will set you apart from other candidates.

6- You become a savvy traveller

You rely less on translations when abroad and become more independent thanks to your knowledge of the language. You’re less likely to be taken advantage of by some unscrupulous people wanting to make a buck out of you.

You can also have a much better experience of your trip because you can have real and meaningful conversations with the natives. You might even make new friends and contacts for life.

7- You enjoy literature and the performing arts in their original language.

It’s always better to read books and watch films and TV series in their original language. You’ll be able to enjoy all the nuances of the literary works without having to rely on translations which sometimes are not up to scratch.

These are just some of the reasons why you should take the plunge and learn a language. I am aware that your reasons might be very different from these. It does not really matter as long as you are motivated, committed and ready.
